Local Radio Day 2019 is set to be celebrated on Friday 24th May with new organisers Local Radio Alliance. Launched by UKRD in 2016, the day highlights the value of local radio and celebrates the relationship between stations and their listeners.
Assistant Editor of BBC Sussex and BBC Surrey, Mark Carter is one of the champions of this year’s day. Mark said: “I am looking forward to the day. I really like the idea of all sectors of radio coming together and this is a brilliant opportunity to do that.”
“For many listeners, radio is about more than just the music choices you enjoy. It is local voices talking about the things you care about. It’s about being connected and able to find out what is going on in your area.”
Dom Chambers, Founder, Local Radio Alliance
Last year over a hundred radio stations celebrated by doing something extra special in their transmission areas. For example, the Wycombe Sound team toured their community in a Routemaster bus, playing music, conducting interviews and inviting listeners to be part of their outside broadcast. Station founder, Phillipa Sawyer commented: “We love the day because it gives us a great excuse to get out and meet listeners face to face.”
“On behalf of our members from all sectors of the audio and radio industry, Radio Academy wishes the team the very best of success for Friday 24th May.”
JOHN DASH, DEPUTY CHAIR OF RADIO ACADEMY
Maxine Stride, Director of Local Radio Alliance, has been looking at UK stations and their Local Radio Day plans. “I was amazed at the sheer variety of ways stations have been engaged with their communities in previous years. There are some fantastic plans for 2019 too. Take a look at our participation page for a few examples of their efforts on Twitter. I have compiled the biggest, best and most unique ideas, including new suggestions on how to get your listeners involved.
